Carol Hughes runs a race in Arizona. The Arlington ISD librarian recently completed her 50th marathon.In college, Carol Hughes once sprinted a 5K. Afterward, she became so physically sick that she swore off running for good.
When she started running, Hughes gave herself small goals. Make it to the end of the block. Just get to that tree. Every day, she pushed herself a little farther. After completing her first marathon in 2011, Carol Hughes, right, poses with her sister, Sherry Kramer. Hughes, a librarian in Arlington ISD, recently completed her 50th marathon.One year, she ran five marathons in five days across five states — Nebraska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming — as part of the Center of the Nation Series.
The following year, she tried again, this time finishing the race. By the end, she could not walk or even stand without help. Later, all of her toenails fell out.Ultimately, Hughes wants to run a marathon in all 50 states. So far, she has checked off 27.Carol Hughes runs her 50th marathon in November 2021 in the Philadelphia Marathon.
