Amtrak is planning for the implementation of a new route to Mobile in 2025
Officials hope to restore route to Mobile before Super Bowl LIX NEW ORLEANS - All that stands in the way of a restored Amtrak route from New Orleans to Mobile -- with stops in cities along the Mississippi Gulf Coast -- is an expected vote of approval by the Mobile City Council next week.
“I think it’s going to be a tremendous impact for everybody,” said Knox Ross, chairman of the Southern Rail Commission. The Southern Rail Commission -- a partnership of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana -- has secured almost $10 million under the Restoration and Enhancement Grant Program. But that requires a non-federal match. That amount rises each year. For instance, federal funds cover 90 percent of the cost in the first year of service but only 30 percent by year six, then nothing after that.
Stops would include New Orleans, Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, Pascagoula and Mobile. The plan is for Amtrak to run the trains daily. Platform stops have already been built in every city but Mobile.
