In May, Bill de Blasio paid nearly $20,000 for a 3-minute video announcing his candidacy for president. Now his team says the video wasn’t a campaign expense.

Mayor Bill de Blasio paid nearly $20,000 for a video announcing his candidacy for the White House in May.

When de Blasio announced his White House bid, a spokesperson told reporters the campaign would pay the $19,964 cost of producing the video. Instead, the expense was covered by a state political action committee the mayor set up in 2018 which he said was to help Democrats win legislative seats in Albany.

De Blasio's campaign attorney told POLITICO he would not be reimbursing those donations because they were not made to an exploratory committee. Instead, the lawyer argued, they were given to a PAC established to help candidates win state Senate races that later took on the dual purpose of underwriting the mayor's exploratory efforts.

“Talk to the campaign about any of the specifics or technical things because they can answer it better. Fairness PAC worked on behalf of a number of candidates. We held events for candidates. We supported candidates all over the country up to the 2018 election. And everything we’ve done is according to the law,” he said, seemingly referring to a separate federal PAC he established last year to support left-leaning candidates.
