After women’s crew was dropped in ’20, this year's Classic ‘a final go’
But nine former members of the Aztecs’ NCAA program will row as an alumni team Sunday in the 47th Crew Classic on Mission Bay.
The Aztecs women’s crew numbered about 50 athletes with 20 scholarships when it was eliminated. At the time, the Aztecs were making gains under head coach Bill Zack. At the time Wicker called the decision to end women’s crew: “The hardest I’ll make as an athletic director.” “Some of us asked about the opportunity of forming a club program like the men have at San Diego State,” said Broadland. “The school did not work with us.”
Bobbie Smith, the executive director of the Crew Classic, was the Aztecs freshman crew coach when the program was ended. She was also the coach of the Aztecs four that won a conference title in 2018.
