He’d signed a six-year deal with the Bundesliga’s Bayer Leverkusen at 16 but was seldom used and homesick, and his four MLS seasons with San Jose were on loan from the German club. After playing just seven first-team Bundesliga matches – all in 2004-05, the final year of his contract – he committed himself to MLS by signing with the Galaxy.
“Should I have stayed at Everton? Maybe, right? But again, the decisions I made were not necessarily short term, but they just felt right at the moment. And you trust your gut, and sometimes you look back and go, ‘OK, maybe that wasn’t right.’ But I still, I think, took advantage of all the opportunities I had for the most part and did my best. I’m not perfect.”
He made those comments to the late Grant Wahl, who published the comments in a book that was published during the middle of the following season and excerpted in Sports Illustrated. Donovan later said he regretted not going to Beckham first, but he never disavowed any of the quotes.
