Alaska Dept. of Health recommends RSV vaccine for pregnant women.

Published: Oct. 12, 2023 at 10:37 AM AKDTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - Respiratory Syncytial Virus, better known as RSV, is the leading cause of infant hospitalization in the United States. In Alaska, infants are at particularly high risk of obtaining a severe form of RSV.

While it is already recommended that infants older than eight months be vaccinated, the Alaska Dept. of Health is now recommending a vaccine for women who are between 32 and 36 weeks of gestation. The RSVPreF vaccine is approved by the FDA and study results show that maternal RSV vaccination resulted in a reduction of virus contraction by over 80 percent for young infants. Once infants reach the 8 month mark, their first vaccination reduced hospitalization risk by 90 percent.
