Bergeron isn’t convinced by the wind theory — “These are not the craziest winds we’ve ever seen in existence, so you would expect this to happen every time there is a major wind event,” he said — and the speculation that a population increase led the pelicans to be in competition with one another for food doesn’t sit quite right with him either, again because hatch years were not overrepresented in the stranding event.
It could take years for experts to come to a satisfying conclusion. For now, Bergeron said his organization is focusing on nursing the live pelicans in its care back to health. After careful monitoring and treatment, 137 of the birds had gained weight and were stable enough to return to their natural habitat, including the one found in San Francisco, who was released at Encinal Beach in Alameda about three weeks after she was admitted.
