Alan Scott's return to a solo Green Lantern series captures the hero's compassion and heart, showing why he has become a role model for so many.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, returns to his own solo series at last, showing just why he has become such a beloved mentor figure for heroes across the DC Universe. This first issue places Alan's heart front and center, highlighting how he puts his love for kin and country foremost — even in a world that would spurn him for it.

The excellent team of Tim Sheridan, Cian Tormey, Matt Herms, and Lucas Gattoni takes readers back to Alan Scott's heyday of 1941 and the formation of the Justice Society of America in Alan Scott: The Green Lantern #1. Alan faces pressure from the FBI's J. Edgar Hoover to be seen more publicly with the JSA, despite Alan's preference for working alone. Hoover blackmails Alan, threatening to out him as gay if he does not comply.

Shaken out of his reverie by police sirens and reports of an armed robbery, Alan transforms into the Green Lantern and flies to the scene only to discover two things: that someone resembling him has already caught the perpetrator, and that the gunman appears to be the drowned and burned body of Corporal Ladd himself.

This debut issue takes care to frame Alan's love as his defining characteristic — both romantic and otherwise. His relationship with Corporal Ladd carries the bulk of the narrative, introducing readers both to how Alan thinks and feels as well as setting up the book's antagonist in the Crimson Flame. Their romance comes across as both natural and human, as both heartfelt and flawed, without being played up for melodrama.

DC Perfectly Redefines the Oldest Green Lantern Alan Scott: The Green Lantern #1 serves as a strong contemporary introduction to Alan Scott that embraces both his queerness and his compassion.
