The cities of Alamo Heights and San Antonio are forging ahead on plans for Broadway Street on different paths.
Cyclists ride down Broadway Street through Alamo Heights, which has agreed with the Texas Department of Transportation not to reduce the number of vehicle lanes.The Texas Department of Transportation is working with the City of Alamo Heights on a $27 million plan to turn Broadway into a pedestrian-friendly corridor — and holding it up as an example of how San Antonio might proceed with its own derailed plans to overhaul their portion of road.
The overall project will cost in excess of $40 million and will be funded by numerous partners in addition to the City of Alamo Heights. The project will include at least $13 million to address flood and drainage issues along Broadway in Alamo Heights, with a portion of the project paid for with the proceeds of city bonds.
Pointing to the progress Alamo Heights has made since eliminating planned lane reductions, Gallegos said, “I think that’s definitely something that the City of San Antonio could do as well.” Walsh said he remains optimistic that TxDOT’s concerns about congestion can be solved while still reducing the number of lanes.
