Olin, which produces chlorine, opened its south Alabama plant in the 1950s. Seven employees told ProPublica they’d been exposed to asbestos, a chemical that can cause mesothelioma and other deadly cancers, as well as chronic lung conditions, for decades.
Bertha Reed, a plant employee who worked a variety of jobs and was around asbestos, was diagnosed with lung cancer and - an action nearly 40 other countries have taken - but Olin continues to use the substance in most of its plants nationwide.
