Alabama's National Weather Service had a pointed rebuttal to President Trump's Hurricane Dorian tweet.
Sunday morning, as Hurricane Dorian sat east of Florida, just over the Bahamas, President TrumpThe tweet read"In addition to Florida - South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, will most likely be hit harder than anticipated. Looking like one of the largest hurricanes ever. Already category 5.
It read"Alabama will NOT see any impacts from #Dorian. We repeat, no impacts from Hurricane #Dorian will be felt across Alabama. The system will remain too far east. #alwx."As residents of the southeast United States become increasingly concerned with the 160+ mph sustained winds of Hurricane Dorian, they look for the most accurate and reliable information about the potential dangers.
Unfortunately, President Trump made a mistake in issuing a warning to Alabama residents, a warning that the National Weather Service tried to clarify. Did the clarification get as many views as Trump's tweet? Unlikely, with Trump having nearly 64 million followers and Alabama's NWS account having just 53,000 followers.
In addition to the mistake of including Alabama as the list of states in danger, Trump also stated in a news conference that"I'm not sure I've even heard of a category 5." While Trump is clearly not a meteorologist he is the president of the United States and has teams of advisors.
