Alabama was one of the 19 states to challenge the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, and Attorney General Steve Marshall said the decision was “an important win on multiple fronts.”
Birmingham-based environmental group GASP said in a news release that the decision makes immediate action to reduce greenhouse gases even more critical.
“We ask that Alabama leaders like Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and Governor Kay Ivey do their part to move our state away from dirty fossil fuels and towards a clean, healthy future, Hansen said. “Mayor Woodfin must make good on his promise to transition the City of Birmingham to 100% clean energy. We urge Governor Ivey and Mayor Woodfin to join us in calling for Alabama Power to stop investing in fossil fuel infrastructure and instead embrace healthy energy like wind and solar.
Rambo, with the Southern Environmental Law Center, said the country needs to take dramatic action to curb its greenhouse gas emissions quickly. Waterkeeper Alliance CEO Marc Yaggi said the decision would hurt the nation’s waterways by exacerbating climate change and limiting the government’s ability to respond to new challenges without congressional authority.
The National Mining Association praised the court’s decision to limit the EPA’s authority while acknowledging the need for measures to address climate change. The justices heard arguments in the case on the same day that a United Nations panel’s report warned that, likely making the world sicker, hungrier, poorer and more dangerous in the coming years.
