The latest available enplanement data from the Federal Aviation Administration - data that shows the number of passengers who boarded an airplane at a given airport during the year - shows a huge drop in passengers at Alabama airports in 2020. In 2019, that state’s four largest airports - Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International, Huntsville International-Carl T Jones Field, Mobile Regional and Montgomery Regional - saw a total of more than 2.7 million enplanements.
Birmingham’s airport - the largest in the state - went from 1.5 million enplanements in 2019, and trending up, down to just 622,000 in 2020. It creeped back up above 1 million in 2021, but is still well shy of pre-pandemic levels.shows air traffic has continued to rebound through the first part of 2022, but still hasn’t hit pre-pandemic levels. That data shows the airport has seen just under 795,000 total passengers through April of 2022, or about 198,000 per month.
