Aaron J. Gaines, 39, had pleaded guilty to a seven-count indictment that included charges of robbery, carjacking and illegal possession of a firearm.
AKRON, Ohio — A federal judge has sentenced an Akron man to 25 years in prison for a string of crimes in 2021 in which the man robbed a store, broke into a home and fired at a person inside, and carjacked a vehicle.
“This defendant committed a series of violent crimes, armed with a firearm, that put the lives of multiple innocent people in danger,” first assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Baeppler said in a statement. “As evident by this lengthy sentence, violent crimes, particularly those committed while illegally possessing a firearm, will only result in a long time in federal prison.”
Later that night, police were called to a home in Akron and told that Gaines, while trying to steal a vehicle parked nearby, had fired at a person inside the residence. Gaines managed to steal the keys to the car, but did not leave with the vehicle, prosecutors say.
