A curfew was in place in downtown Akron from 9 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. today as the city deals with reaction to the police shooting of Jayland Walker.

A group of protesters gathered in front of the Akron Police Department at about 8:30 p.m. but dispersed when afor downtown by Mayor Dan Horrigan took effect, according to WKYC Channel 3. About 50 police officers dressed in riot gear exited and stood in front of the station when the curfew went into effect, but went back inside after just a few minutes, according to WKYC.

Horrigan said in a Monday news release announcing the curfew that demonstrations that remained peaceful during most of Sunday turned “violent and destructive” later in the evening, with multiple businesses along Akron’s Main Street corridor having windows broken. Multiple news outlets reported that Akron police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd.

“We cannot and will not tolerate the destruction of property or violence,” Horrigan said in the statement.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
