Ming-Chi Kuo is predicting the next AirPods release will come this year but that Apple will change its policy about current models.
In which case, Apple will be returning to the strategy it employed when it released the second-gen AirPods, dropping the first version instantly. It’s worth noting that while the first and second iterations were priced the same, the third-generation AirPods price went up, leading to the big price differential.
Kuo describes this projected move of dropping AirPods Pro when Pro 2 land as a “wake-up call for AirPods”. There’s more. “AirPods may only cost $249 at best without more innovative features,” Kuo says. This refers to AirPods Pro rather than regular AirPods, as the price is way higher than any regular ’Pods have ever cost. And the meaning is a little unclear. While I think the price is probably right, I don’t see any reason Apple would release new Pro earbuds without adding new features.
As for timing, Kuo reiterates what has been said before, that the release will be some time in the second half of 2022. My belief is that September, October latest, will be the release moment for AirPods Pro 2—and likely the last time the first-generation Pro earbuds will be available.
