The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz is reporting no active coronavirus cases on board the ship as it prepares for deployment, easing fears of a potential outbreak while at sea
., making the ship the Navy's fourth aircraft carrier so far to report an infection among crew members.On Thursday, the Navy said one of the sailors’ tests had actually come back inconclusive, but was being treated as a presumed positive case. That sailor, who was tested on March 24 and removed from the Nimitz after exhibiting symptoms, has now met the requirements to be considered recovered and will soon be allowed back on the ship, said Lt. Rochelle Rieger, spokesperson for the 3rd Fleet.
The other sailor who tested positive for coronavirus was out of the state and had not been on board the ship when they fell ill. That person has since recovered. The crew has stayed aboard the ship pierside since April 1, and no one except those exhibiting symptoms have been allowed off the ship in an attempt to reduce sailors’ exposure and more easily monitor them for symptoms. The sailors are not getting their temperatures checked daily, but have been instructed to self-isolate and call the medical team — who have the proper personal protective equipment — for a more thorough screening if they start to feel symptoms associated with Covid-19.
