A Code Orange alert is in effect Friday, meaning the air pollution is particularly unhealthy for certain central Pennsylvanians.

Central Pennsylvania’s air quality will slightly improve on Friday, but an unhealthy haze from Canadian wildfires will continue to hang over the midstate.is in effect across the midstate Friday, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection said.

The alert means fine particles in the air from east Canadian wildfires could be unhealthy for some members of the public — specifically children, the elderly, and people with asthma, heart or lung disease, according to the DEP. Officials are recommending central Pennsylvanians, particularly those in one or multiple risk categories, to avoid long, strenuous outdoor activities on Friday., according to the EPA. Winds that were coming from the west and northwest will become more southerly, with chances of thunderstorms and thus “decreasing air quality impacts from the wildfire smoke.”

“Conditions will be more favorable for dispersion Friday afternoon compared to conditions Thursday,” the EPA wrote in its forecast, but “the fires continue to burn so even a pattern shift changing local conditions for the weekend does not mean the impacts from smoke are over for the foreseeable future.”Showers and storms could start Friday night and pick back up after 2 p.m. on Saturday. Saturday’s storms could last through the afternoon and evening, forecasters said.
