The effects are linked to vascular dementia, said the report authors, who explained how they think it likely that air pollution contributes to mental decline and dementia caused by "effects on the blood vessels". "We think there is a strong case for the effects of air pollutants on the cardiovascular system having a secondary effect on the brain," they said.
COMEAP has not made recommendations on how to estimate the effects of air pollution on dementia, and they think more research will be needed before this can be done with confidence. They have made recommendations for further research, however, that includes epidemiological studies on cognitive decline and dementia, imaging and pathological studies, and research on how the brain handles particulate matter.
