Val Barber learns secrets and hides his own.
Summary Irish filmmaker Fintan Connolly makes the most of Dublin amidst a global pandemic in Barber, a new mystery movie he helmed from a screenplay he penned alongside Fiona Bergin. They reunite with respected actor Aidan Gillen , who plays private investigator Val Barber. Having left the police force and his wife some years back, he now takes one mystery at a time while maintaining a close relationship with his daughter.
I love shooting on the street anywhere in Dublin. We had done a five-minute version of something like this, maybe three years previous, where we were driving around in the rain and filming the traffic lights with whatever lenses we had. It was like, "Wow, this really does look like a proper noir film." We hadn't really seen it before in Dublin.
Aidan Gillen: That's something that I don't think about but that I do think about. I think about it all in advance and then forget about it. I always like to try and, when you're shooting a conversation, assume that you've already missed a bit and you're dropping in halfway.
I also thought it was so fun that Camille O'Sullivan was in it for a little bit. Were you guys just having a lark one day, or did that take some convincing to get her in there? Aidan Gillen: Yeah. There was talk about that, actually. There was a bit of a bite from a TV company here, so I don't know. Finances, even in our national broadcaster here, they're pretty tight, and if anything is a little too off the beaten track, they may play it safe. I don't know. I've worked a lot for myself on other crime dramas and they've done all right, but they're not as nuanced or as character-driven or as slow-paced – and I mean in a good way.
