When concerning Star Wars’ future, it is clear that Ahsoka and Rey are taking Luke Skywalker’s post-OT Legends stories and making them better.
After the recent announcements from Lucasfilm about Star Wars' future from Star Wars Celebration 2023 , it is clear Luke Skywalker's Legends stories from after the original trilogy are being handed to Rey\ and Ahsoka Tano. While this may annoy a particular section of the Star Wars fanbase that holds Luke's Legends stories close to their heart, Rey and Ahsoka being given these stories will serve the franchise better in the long run.
Based on what has been established in the era of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka is set to be the core Jedi responsible for taking Thrawn down. In the original Zahn novels, Luke Skywalker filled this role, as Ahsoka Tano was a character who did not yet exist when the books were written. However, in new canon, Ahsoka has been established as the one searching for Thrawn to put a stop to his plans after hearing whispers of the Empire's resurgence.
With the announcement of Rey's New Jedi Order being the basis of an upcoming movie from Lucasfilm, it is clear Rey's effort at rebuilding the Jedi will receive much more treatment. Not only is Rey getting her own movie, but the entire plot will likely be dedicated to rebuilding the Jedi in a way that avoids the mistakes of the Order's history.
Why It Makes Sense That Ahsoka & Rey Get Luke Skywalker's Legends Stories Despite the potential anger from those that thought Luke Skywalker deserved more of a focus after Return of the Jedi, it actually makes a lot more sense for Ahsoka and Rey to receive these stories. If they were going to be told on film in the way the stories were initially told, they would have had to have gone into production in the 80s or 90s.
