Afternoon showers, storms on Monday in Chicago
CHICAGO -- A storm system entered the Chicago area late Monday and was set to hang around through the evening.The system brought plentiful moisture into our local atmosphere, interacting with a stalled boundary overhead to produce numerous slow-moving thunderstorms. The storms may produce mainly small hail, wind gusts to 40 miles per hour, and heavy rain rates of 1-2 inches per hour. Parts of the area, including Chicago, are at a 2 out of 4 risk of flash flooding.
Torrential thunderstorms were pounding that area around 6 p.m.The Chicago White Sox home game against the Washington Nationals has also been postponed due to the rain.Rain is expected to wind down a bit overnight before blossoming again on Tuesday. Tuesday's rain should remain lighter, with fewer thunderstorms expected. Temperatures will be much cooler—only rising into the 50s—with gusty northeast winds over 30 miles per hour.
