Will Smith had big plans to launch an ambitious cinematic universe with After Earth. But After Earth 2 never came to fruition for a few reasons.
The Will Smith-starring post-apocalyptic actioner After Earth was planned to launch a cinematic universe and multimedia franchise, but the sequels never came to fruition for various reasons. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the master of plot twists, After Earth stars Smith as Cypher Raige opposite his real-life son Jaden Smith as his character’s son, Kitai Raige. The Raiges live on Nova Prime, a space colony where the human race moved after an environmental catastrophe left Earth uninhabitable.
Sony was already skeptical about After Earth’s blockbuster chances, since their headlining A-list star spends most of the movie stuck on a spaceship. The studio decided to feature Smith prominently in After Earth’s marketing to imply that he would get in on a lot of the movie’s action. The box office underperformance confirmed Sony’s fears that After Earth would fail to strike a chord with audiences.
When After Earth bombed, Smith felt responsible for the “absolutely vicious” response that Jaden received from critics and the public, because Jaden had “faithfully done everything that I’d instructed him to do” during the making of the movie. At the age of 15, shortly after the release of After Earth, Jaden asked his parents if he could become an emancipated minor .
Will Smith Decided To Focus His Attention & Career Elsewhere Rather than risking further commercial failure and public mauling by expanding After Earth into the 1000 AE universe, Smith decided to focus his attention and the future of his career on other projects. In the years since After Earth bombed at the box office and After Earth 2 was canceled, Smith has done some of his most acclaimed work.
