Lady Deer’s run to state softball tournament was award winning
From numerous home runs to plenty of singles, doubles and triples, the Lady Deer hitters were rarely quiet at the plate. Even in the state championship semifinals, the girls banged out eight hits, striking out just once over 34 at-bats.A high school softball coach knows it’s been a tremendously successful postseason campaign when a team spends almost as many days in the playoffs as they did competing in district competition.
BEST CLUTCH CATCH: Lindsey McKnight in right field gloving a well-hit ball to end Game 3 against Brazoswood and preserving a 3-2 victory. The catch forced the Lady Bucs to strand the potential tying run on second base, while preserving a come-from-behind win. BEST TAPE JOB: Deer Park’s medical staff applying numerous layers of medical tape over a hazardous-looking piece of aluminum jutting out from a corner of Deer Park’s bullpen at Summer Creek High School’s field. A 1,000-to-1 chance of it happening, but it still had serious cut written all over it had a player run into that corner chasing a foul ball.
MOST MADDENING INNING: The first inning of state semifinal game Friday night when Deer Park put its opening three batters on and could manage just one run. A nice single to anywhere in the outfield likely scores two runs with perhaps more to come.
