Abdul Wasi Safi, an Afghan soldier who helped the US military in Afghanistan, is freed after spending months in immigration detention after coming to the US seeking asylum in the United States on Friday, Jan. 27, 2023 in Houston, TX.Abdul Wasi Safi fought alongside American soldiers in Afghanistan, but he was left behind when the country fell. When he finally reached the United States, after making a perilous journey from Brazil, he was arrested.
Jackson Lee said that instead of being put through the asylum-seeking process, Safi was charged because he didn't present himself at a legal port of entry. He was facing an expedited deportation process. Jackson Lee also said that the attention by her office and advocates managed to keep him from pleading guilty to the criminal charges against him.
