The Aerosmith guitarist offers some backstory on his life and work.
At the start of the iconic “Walk This Way” video a wall separates Aerosmith and Run-DMC as they try to separately jam. At the time art imitated life as MTV mostly played the videos of white artists. “And the weren't playing any rap,” says Aerosmith lead guitarist Joe Perry.Ultimately in the wall-breaking, worlds colliding rap-meets-rock video, the groups end up making music together on the same stage. All in rap/rock harmony.
In 1986, when Perry filmed the video he chose a uniquely eye-catching guitar in his collection: The black Guild X-100 Bladerunner. “We were working on the music for our Permanent Vacation record when a distributor for Guild came by with this prototype,” says Perry who collects Italian made guitars from the 50 and 60 and is fascinated by guitar shapes, especially when they’re not the standard “West coast, surfer-type-thing evolved from the Spanish guitar.
After performing nearly five decades Aerosmith continues to take risks and rock on their own terms. The group which features Steven Tyler , Perry , Brad Whitford , Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer , has sold 150 million albums worldwide. They have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and won four Grammys.Aerosmith: Deuces are Wild
