Lawmakers in Indonesia's parliament approved legislation on Tuesday, in a move that will see premarital and extramarital sex banned.

The new criminal code, which criminalizes premarital and extramarital sex, and cohabitation of unmarried couples, has proved controversial, but received a majority of the votes from lawmakers during the plenary session this week. However, Yasonna Laoly, minister of law and human rights, told the parliament:"We have tried our best to accommodate the important issues and different opinions which were debated. However, it is time for us to make a historical decision on the penal code amendment and to leave the colonial criminal code we inherited behind."
