Accused top lieutenant in Jalisco cartel extradited to San Diego [Breaking]
A man accused of being a top commander in the ultra-violent Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación has been extradited to San Diego to face drug-trafficking and money-laundering charges.
Ruben Velazquez Aceves was transferred from Mexican to U.S. custody on Thursday. He appeared in San Diego federal court the following day, when he entered a not-guilty plea to several felony charges, according to court records unsealed this week. He is being held without bail. Nicknamed “El Ingeniero,” or The Engineer, he is accused of coordinating the distribution of large quantities of heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana, the indictment says.The allegations also include a conspiracy to launder the illicit proceeds. The indictment lists more than 200 accounts from various mainstream banks that prosecutors have targeted for forfeiture.
Velazquez Aceves was arrested in 2020 near the Mexican city of Guadalajara on the U.S. arrest warrant, which was first issued in 2014. At least 10 others have been indicted alongside him. A handful have since pleaded guilty and been sentenced to prison. The Jalisco cartel, also known as CJNG for short, has grown into one of the most powerful criminal organizations in Mexico and has been challenging the Sinaloa cartel in Tijuana and elsewhere for dominance.
