A Warren County man was shot to death Friday, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.
Jaquawn Housey was charged with murder and weapons-related offenses in the slaying of 39-year-old Rodney Phelps, according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes.
Police were checking a report of gunfire around 11:20 p.m. Friday when they discovered Phelps, of Washington Township, shot multiple times on Van Houten Street, between Auburn and Summer streets, authorities said. He died at the scene. “The subsequent investigation revealed that Mr. Housey was responsible for the murder of Mr. Phelps,” Valdes and Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora said in a joint statement.
A judge was set to consider a request from prosecutors that Housey remain in custody as the case proceeds, authorities said. Defense attorney information was not immediately available. Authorities have not commented on a possible motive for the attack, which reportedly marked Paterson’s fourth slaying of the year.
