Co-hosts Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall speak onstage during the 94th Annual Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre on March 27, 2022 in Hollywood, California.Much was made of whether the Oscars would allow an appearance from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but the show’s first political statement was of a more domestic nature.
The show began with the hosts making a direct statement about a proposed Florida law that opponents have dubbed thebill, which bans discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in some elementary school classrooms. The legislation has passed the state Senate and house and is awaiting the signature of Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has shown support for the law.
In response, Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer and Regina Hall closed their monologue with a message for the state. “For you people in Florida, we’re gonna have a gay night. Gay, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay.” Immediately following the monologue, Ariana DeBose won the award for best supporting actress for her role in"West Side Story," the first win for an openly queer woman of color.
The Oscars is not the first Hollywood organization to make a statement regarding the bill. Disney has halted donations to Florida politicians as a result, though California Gov. Gavin Newsom has pressed the company to take
