Supreme Court’s abortion decision condemned, celebrated in San Antonio

widely condemned the Supreme Court’s decision Friday to strike down Roe v. Wade, a law that allowed women to obtain abortions in the United States for nearly the past 50 years. While Gov. Greg Abbott called the highest court’s opinion correct and spoke of the “sanctity of life,” others described the decision as “an attack” and “absolutely devastating.”

Under a “trigger law” that passed the Texas Legislature last year, abortion will be illegal in the state 30 days after the Supreme Court’s ruling Friday. “Personal health care decisions should not be punished,” Gonzales said. “The right to marry should not be punished. At a time when crime is high, we should all be focused on gun violence and supporting victims of crimes. Instead, the government wants to do the opposite and focus on those at their most vulnerable.”

“We all believe this pause in abortion care, while heartbreaking, is the best way to protect our staff and patients and ensure we remain strong, viable organizations providing health care in years to come.”
