Tolkien acknowledged the influence of the Kalevala on his work, especially The Silmarillion. For instance, the tragic story of Kullervo served as inspiration for Túrin Turambar's character in Narn i Chîn Húrin, including a poignant scene where a talking sword is used in a suicide.
