By the end of this season, the new Jets QB will have banked $365 million over the course of his 19-year career. That’ll put him $32 million ahead of Brady for the top spot in NFL on-field earnings—assuming TB12 doesn’t get bored posting cat videos and come out of retirement.
he signed with the Green Bay Packers last year. Assuming Rodgers plays out the full contract through the 2026 season, and the deal doesn’t get reworked, he’ll end his career with on-field earnings of somewhere in the neighborhood of $450 million.
Of course, if history is any guide, this “will he or won’t he play” drama might continue for the next few offseasons. It’s a time-honored tradition for former Packers quarterbacks. Rodgers’ predecessor Brett Favre similarly wallowed in the media spotlight by teasing retirement over and over again. Brady is about to fall down the on-field earnings list faster than a receiver trying to cut on the turf in the last. He’ll be overtaken by the Los Angeles Rams’ Matthew Stafford next year, and by Russell Wilson of the Denver Broncos the year after that. Don’t shed a tear for the guy who inspired changing Tampa to Tompa, though. Sure, his days of raking in millions on the field are presumably over, but he’s not done earning. He’s reportedly slated to bring in $37.
Rodgers and Brady are at the top of a heap of quarterbacks. The 13 highest-earning players on the field in NFL history through the 2023 season have all been signal-callers. It’s enough to make you wonder if the position should be renamed “moneyback.” The highest-earning non-quarterback remains former Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who had chalked up $181 million in career on-field earnings when he hung up his spikes after the 2020 season.
