A Texas entrepreneur is bringing back the woolly mammoth.to create a genetically engineered elephant that could survive in the Arctic.
They also want to give elephants a new habitat that’s far away from the destructive forces of humans, eradicate elephant diseases such as herpesvirus and create new reproductive technologies that could benefit a variety of breeding programs. Scientists are targeting 80 to 100 genes that could boost the elephant’s cold resistance. Once they’ve found a winning combination, the researchers will create an embryo that carries the edited traits they are seeking. The mammoth-elephant embryo will then be placed into an African elephant surrogate , where gestation takes 22 months. Colossal is also researching the use of artificial wombs.“We're confident in our timeline,” Lamm said, “but it is aggressive.
Its largest investor is billionaire Thomas Tull, who founded Legendary Entertainment, the company responsible for movies including “300,” “The Hangover,” “Interstellar” and “Jurassic World.” Lamm did not say how much Tull, who is no longer with Legendary, invested. Some investors are interested in woolly mammoths for entertainment or education. Others hope that Colossal will develop technologies that could be used in other ways, including human reproduction and editing multiple genes at once .
He said Arctic emissions over the next century could make climate change occur 10 to 15 percent faster than it would otherwise. He also feels more comfortable testing this theory with animals that already exist in the region or in similar ecosystems. Elephants are “ecosystem engineers” because their introduction can totally reshape an area as they knock down trees and spread seeds through their poop. This would affect all the other animals and people that depend on the ecosystem as it currently operates.
