On December 21, Catapang said two gang leaders inside Bilibid gave sworn affidavits detailing how Bantag allegedly. Bilibid gang leaders Jonathan Cañete of Batang Cebu and Ronald Usman of Batang Mindanao said they were allegedly stabbed by Bantag in February 2022 when they were summoned along with other gang leaders to discuss the escape of prisoners.
Bantag’s lawyer, Rocky Balisong, denied the allegations and said his client “does not remember” stabbing prisoners while serving as the corrections chief. In an interview with ANC on December 22, Catapang also revealed that, under Bantag’s watch, BuCor personnel had been asking families visiting their loved ones inside the national penitentiary to pay “entrance fees.” Catapang said some Bilibid personnel had been asking for payment ranging from P30 to P40 from the visitors.on December 20 that Bantag could possibly face a plunder complaint over the questionable release of funds for the construction of BuCor facilities.
After an investigation, Catapang said it was discovered that P950 million or 95% of the funds had already been released, but only 60% of the project had been completed. The acting BuCor chief said he had ordered a stop to the construction.Rappler.com
