TODAY’S EDITORIAL: A shortsighted move to cleanse the police top brass
INTERIOR Secretary Benhur Abalos has asked the 300 generals and full colonels in the Philippine National Police to submit their courtesy resignation in what he said was an effort to weed out the officers involved in illegal drugs.Abalos described the purge of the police top brass as a 'shortcut' meant to do away with long and tedious investigations that lead to too few convictions.President Fidel V.
''Identify the crooked and persecute them,' Pimentel suggested.Carlos Conde of Human Rights Watch called it 'preposterous' and 'does not serve the cause of justice and accountability — far from it.'Like Pimentel, Conde believes that the proper course of action would have been to investigate 'and file appropriate charges in court if warranted.'The PNP has not been totally remiss in punishing errant officers.
