A highly experienced team of animators use about 800 drones to form 12 bright images up in the dark sky.
When visitors gather for the Independence Day 3rd Annual Drone Light Show Festival on Sunday, June 30, at Hansen Dam Soccer Fields in Lake View Terrace, they will bring blankets, chairs, snacks and drinks.
The event is not just aesthetically pleasing, it’s a response by elected officials to address some pressing issues associated with traditional Fourth of July fireworks displays, including poor air quality, fire hazards and loud noise. Rodriguez declined to provide the cost of the show — its fleet of drones has increased from 500 to 800 drones since 2022. But she said that this year, “We got more drones for less money because the technology is improving.”
The software operates every drone, giving each drone a direction on where to fly, and what images to form. For example, if one of the drones is “misbehaving” within the safe zone, the software sends it back to the base on the ground. The software also makes sure the drones are not flying in several directions during and after the show. The FAA regulations don’t allow engineers to fly their drones above the audience, bystanders or cars.
“We have communications though LAFD, LAPD, executive producer of the show, our pilot and what we call ‘show control,’” he said. “We have a lot of explosions and those are horrific to the senior citizens, individuals with disabilities and animals, not to mention our veterans with post-traumatic stress,” he said. “But the main concern is fire prevention.”
