The quaintness and mystery of old-growth trees canopied over 19th-century properties; the time warp of the steep stoop or the walk-up terrace porch; the eye-drawing power of the front yard, from block to block, filled with heritage plantings and moss-stained statues; the overwhelming, ever-precious sense of neighborhood, of living in an urban sanctuary consolidated over the centuries by people who lived and live there still — all seemingly mean nothing to the surreptitious limited liability...
After a demolition — almost always a brutal act of construction that arrives without adequate warning and without an ounce of regard for the visceral impact to the street’s ingrained integrity — we are left with scooped-out lots and tree-lifted sidewalks, their foundational palimpsests and fractionated artifacts faint semblances of a structure built, by hand, by long-forgotten craftspeople.
A new massive edifice is minted right there, minus the essential architectural fabric and intrinsic elements of the casualty building. This teardown cycle, supported and signed-off on by government mechanisms influenced decade by decade by real estate and development industries, will undoubtedly continue.
