For the U.S. women’s soccer team, a World Cup qualifying tournament will serve as the first major test of a generation of young goal-scoring talent—led by Sophia Smith and Mallory Pugh—emerging to lead the team in its bid to extend the U.S. dynasty
Qualifying for the World Cup has never been dramatic for the defending-champion U.S. women’s soccer team, which aims to make quick work of it again when it begins play in the Concacaf W Championship against Haiti on Monday.
For the U.S. powerhouse, however, the two-week tournament is an opportunity to do more than punch the team’s ticket to the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next year. It will also serve as the first major test of a generation of young goal-scoring talent—led by Sophia Smith and Mallory Pugh—that is emerging to lead the team in its bid to extend the U.S. dynasty.
