A look back at 31 of JPGaultier’s most unforgettable couture looks.
Last week Jean Paul Gaultier announced on Twitter that he’d take his final runway bow at the finish of his spring 2020 couture show, which took place today. Since then Instagram has been flooded with reminiscences of Gaultier’s career from admirers and collaborators. It’s a long trajectory, indeed.
—was for spring 1997. The clothes he showed then set a template for what was to follow over the next 23 years and 40 or so couture collections.Gaultier has a signature personal style as well as a well-defined design aesthetic, and there is some crossover between the two. The designer’s recurrent use of stripes and plaid reference his one-time uniform of a Breton sweater, kilt, and combat boots. Over the years, Gaultier has interpreted the stripes of the sailor’s sweater in myriad ways.
Named Gaultier Paris, the designer’s couture collection was always a love letter to the French capital, no matter how far-flung his references. Yes, the Eiffel Tower has appeared on several gowns, but the designer’s deeper commitment is to the craft of the métier, which came to being in the city. He’s also mined Gallic tropes, such as the trench coat and the smoking à la Yves Saint Laurent.
: “This show, celebrating 50 years of Jean Paul Gaultier’s career, will also be the last. But rest assured, Haute Couture will continue with a new concept.”, in 2003, Gaultier was cast as the Cheshire Cat. It was an inspired choice given the designer’s sense of fun. As the designer bids adieu to the, um, catwalks, it’s comforting to think that, like Lewis Carroll’s beguiling creature, Gaultier’s joyful approach to fashion will remain present even in his absence.
Here we celebrate the designer’s achievements, with a look back at 31 of his most memorable couture looks.
