Harrison Ford explains that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is his final portrayal of the character because it ends the franchise with a bang.

Harrison Ford explains why Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be his final portrayal of the eponymous archaeologist. The actor has played the iconic character since 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark and over the years returned for the prequel, The Temple of Doom, and the sequels, The Last Crusade and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT During a recent interview with Total Film , Ford opened up about why he decided to be done with the franchise ahead of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's release date. The 80-year-old actor explained that the fifth film, which took over a decade to come together, was "a joyous moment" and a "rare situation" for him because it aligns with his goal to end the franchise "not with a whimper, but a bang.

This is the final film in the series, and this is the last time I’ll play the character. I anticipate that it will be the last time that he appears in a film. I had been ambitious to do this film for 10 years, and there finally came a time when we all committed to that. It was a joyous moment for me. I think it’s a rare situation that I find myself in.

Will Indiana Jones 5 Provide A Satisfying End To The Franchise? Ford's comments come soon after Disney confirmed Indiana Jones 5 will end the franchise for good. There are reports of an Indiana Jones TV show in development, though Ford says he will "not be involved in that, if it does come to fruition.

Whether Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny can provide a satisfying end to the beloved franchise remains to be seen. Lucasfilm seemingly has tremendous confidence in the film as its director James Mangold was recently hired to helm the Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi movie.
