The tour is thrilling the French this year. For the first time in 34 years, a Frenchman—either Thibaut Pinot or Julian Alaphilippe—has a chance of winning when the race finishes on the Champs-Elysées on July 28th. For decades, the French have watched with dismay as the Spanish, Americans and British have successively monopolised the trophy . French suspicions of cheating used to seem like sour grapes.
