With just a little more than $10 to his name, a big dream and a driving desire to make a difference, Brandon Chrostowski started Edwins Leadership & Restaurant Institute 10 years ago. Chrostowski is shown in a booth in the Shaker Square restaurant recently.CLEVELAND, Ohio – Brandon Chrostowski’s vision to start Edwins was born years before the French fine-dining restaurant in Shaker Square opened.
But his vision of helping people through a restaurant remained alive. He started developing relationships with non-profit people and embraced five tenets that guide entrepreneurs:The last step is where guts are required, because it forces action and quashes procrastination. It’s about conquering fear.
“When I opened up Edwins I had 10 dollars and 24 cents or 28 cents in my bank account. That’s all I had to my name. I don’t have a silver spoon. I risked it all.”Backed by two weeks operating expenses and about 60 staffers, Edwins opened its doors. One of Chrostowski’s first actions was to give himself a pay cut and ask the staff to do the same for a couple of weeks. They would know soon enough whether the restaurant would survive.
“I don’t think so,” he said. “It’s about responsibility to the people. If you come convicted with an idea of serving people, then no matter how much sense it makes or doesn’t make you have a responsibility to the people. And in this day we’re getting shellacked, at least in neighborhoods. You see it every day. I saw it in Buckeye. Like now, it’s not good right now, it’s getting harder for people especially if you’ve got very little. Life is hard for someone who is poor now than it ever has been.
“It was a pretty tough program, but it prepared you for the next step in your journey. Nothing is given to you and nothing is easy,” he said. “It gives you all the knowledge you need to go to the next level.”
