Law enforcement said the 71-year-old suspect who fatally stabbed a young boy and seriously wounded a woman was motivated by the Israel-Hamas war. The suspect has been charged with a hate crime.

Deputies responding to the scene found the suspect, identified as Joseph M. Czuba, sitting outside the residence with a cut on his forehead. He was later taken to a local area hospital for treatment. The mother and boy had been renting a floor in Czuba's house for two years without any incident, the organization said.On Saturday morning, Czuba knocked on their door.
Will County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to NPR's request for additional information.
