Police uproot camp pegged to protest against dearness

MUZAFFARABAD – Police on Saturday uprooted a camp set up by locals to register their protest against dearness and exorbitant electricity bills.

The district administration and police sprang into action and a contingent of law enforcers uprooted the camp set up by citizens under the umbrella of the Public Action Committee at Azadi Chowk. On the call of the committee, a number of people gathered for protest and tore the power bills which, they said, were beyond their capacity to pay. They also demonstrated in reaction to the police action and resisted it.

Police teams cracked down on the protest leaders and arrested Jameel Kashmiri and three others. They intensified raids to arrest other activists as well. A number of people gathered at Adda Shaheed Chowk to let loose their indignation. Police, however, tried to disperse them.
