80 years later, upstanders of the Warsaw Ghetto still speak — especially in Passover | Opinion

On Sept. 1, 1939, the Germans invaded Poland with tanks, bombers and fighter planes. The Nazis justified the attack by claiming that Poland was persecuting the ethnic Germans living there and planning to join forces with Great Britain and France to dismember Germany. The Germans encircled Warsaw; it surrendered on Sept. 28.

That year, the Nazis began deporting the surviving Jews to death camps, sending around 265,000 Jews to Treblinka in less than two months and killing approximately 35,000 Jews inside the ghetto. The following day, coinciding with the eve of Passover, 2,000 German soldiers and police officers, armed with artillery and tanks, surrounded the ghetto as many Jews were still participating in Passover Seders —the ritual feast that takes place on the first two nights of the holiday.
