Eight people have been charged in relation to the 2019 death of Jonathan Lancaster at the Alger Correctional Facility.

Among those charged are former warden Scott Sprader, former assistant deputy warden Benny Mercier, four registered nurses and two corrections officers. The State of Michigan alleges that Lancaster stopped eating and drinking while incarcerated and was placed in restraints inside of an observation cell.
Lancaster remained in the observation cell until he died three days later, the Michigan Department of Attorney General said in a statement. "Despite weight loss in excess of fifty pounds in fifteen days, widespread knowledge of his deteriorating state, and Michigan Department of Corrections policies, Lancaster received no emergency medical attention until after his death," the AG's office said.Former Acting Warden Scott Sprader: one count of involuntary manslaughter.Registered Nurse, formerly MDOC, Paul Zelenak: one count of involuntary manslaughter.
