The battles follow a spike in tensions between the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group and the Sudanese military.
, which is collating casualties, said 45 of those civilians were killed in the capital city of Khartoum and 29 others were killed in the provinces, with the town of Nyala recording the most fatalities. Separately, three Sudanese staffers with the World Food Program were killed Saturday elsewhere in the western region of Darfur, and a U.N. document mentioned two deaths in the city of Bahri.
In a Sunday statement, the army said that it had captured all the bases of the Rapid Support Forces in Omdurman, just outside the capital, and taken control of RSF bases in several places, including Port Sudan. The Washington Post was unable to independently verify the claim; both sides have frequently issued contradictory statements about areas they control.
Mohamed Hamed Ashor, a resident of Nyala, said that around midday on Sunday, there was heavy fighting around the airport in the east and around a military base in the west. Heavy weapons had hit residential neighborhoods, he said.Ahmed Gouja, a reporter based in Nyala, told The Post that doctors said at least 22 of the victims had been killed on Saturday, including his neighbor and two others he knew. The hospital had no electricity, he said, and not enough medication.
His small hospital — King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center — was packed with patients because the larger teaching hospital in the area was too close to the frontlines, he said, adding that wounded doctors and patients were lying on the floor and in the courtyard, and staff were scrounging for medical supplies from local pharmacies. Amputations were being rushed in and out of the operating room before it could be cleaned and two exhausted surgeons were working in shifts, he said.
Sudan was already diplomatically isolated before the latest violence. Before Hemedti and Burhan seized power in 2021, Sudan had been ruled for 30 years by Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who was indicted by the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The country’s economy has been battered by hyperinflation and weighed down by massive foreign debt.
Fighting this weekend also erupted in several other cities in Sudan, including Omdurman, Bahri, Meroe, El Obeid and the towns of El Fashir and Nyala in Darfur. A resident of Omdurman, the twin city on the other side of the Nile from Khartoum, said his family had not slept all night because of the sounds of battle.
