The Punjab Excise Department is making big changes to how computerized number plates are issued for vehicles.

This decision comes after many complaints from the public and problems for authorities. Even though they collected fees from about three million vehicle owners in the past three years, there were still delays in getting number plates.

To fix this, the provincial cabinet decided to end the government’s control over making number plates. Now, multiple companies and institutions can make and distribute them. Also, people won’t have to pay fees for new computerized number plates anymore, which should make the registration process easier and save money forFaisal Fareed, the Excise Director General, is leading this change. He told Excise Secretary Masood Mukhtar to stop collecting fees for new or duplicate number plates right away.

This new system is expected to create competition among private companies, which could lower the cost of number plates for vehicle owners by about Rs500. But the department still needs to deal with a backlog of pending number plates for millions of citizens because of past problems. Previous efforts to update the registration system with federal agencies had problems too, like arguments over fees.The Excise and Taxation Department in Punjab is getting tough on vehicles...
