There have been 6,000 reports of abuses by employers on overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Kuwait, Kabayan party-list Representative Ron Salo said Tuesday.

"Lumalabas po na may 6,000 reports ng mga pang-aabuso etc. laban sa mga foreign employers doon sa Kuwait ng ating mga manggawang Filipino," Salo, who chairs the House Committee on Overseas Workers’ Affairs, said at a televised public briefing.

"Ang tanong, doon sa 6,000 na complaints na 'yun, that may represent 6,000 na foreign employers, kasama po kaya sila sa na-blacklist na?” Salo did not identify the source of the figure but said he and the Department of Migrant Workers had a meeting with recruitment agencies on Monday following the killing of overseas Filipino worker Julleebee Ranara.

Asked about the calls for deployment ban, Salo said recruiters expressed concern that employers may not allow OFWs, whose contracts are about to expire, to go home due to fear that they do not have available replacement.The Makabayan bloc filed House Resolution No. 726 urging the House of Representatives to look into the government’s policies in protecting OFWs in light of the recent incident.
